These are Works in Progress and are further examples of my paper-inlay work. The complex shapes have all been hand-cut and placed in position with the tone or shading on each piece, creating the overall 3d effect. 

 

The next step is to cut the shape into the background, but I'm not sure which colour to opt for. Colour theory suggests that placing a bright or light object on a dull, cooler-toned background will make it stand out more.

I've experimented here with a multi-colour star and a monotoned star. Before I paint and cut in the background, I need to decide which background (white or grey) works best for either the colourful star (images 1 and 2), and the monotone star (images 3 and 4).

I eventually settled on a dark gradated background for the monotone shape as you'll see in this short video below - TIP hit the audio button!
